Description

1-2' seedlings. Pruning is recommended from late winter to mid-summer. The shrub tolerates vigorous pruning up to 6 inches above the ground, quickly regenerating new shoots. While hardy, it is sensitive to autumn transplanting. Protection from winter salt spray during the first winter enhances survival chances (Ohio State University). The leaves are bluish-green on top and silvery bluish-green underneath, mostly maintaining this color through autumn and sometimes turning slightly red. They are narrow with serrated edges, densely alternating on thin stems. In April to May, inconspicuous catkins appear, measuring 1 to 2 inches in length and light green in color. Young shrubs feature slender, purplish-red stems that straighten and arch with maturity. Smooth branches age to a light gray color, with older ones developing slight fissures near the base. Effective for erosion control in both wet and dry soils; stems are suitable for basket weaving
